Save Money with GasBuddy Android App

Posted on Aug 28, 2010 in Top Rated Apps, Travel | comment

GasBuddy is here to save you money by displaying real-time gas prices in your area.

  • Version: 1.0
  • Size: 1.70MB
  • Category: Travel
  • Price: Free

GasBuddy is another very simple but extremely useful app that you’ll use on a weekly basis. Pair this app up with Gas Log for complete gas pricing/usage tracking.

First, you’ll want to search for gas prices by your zip code or GPS location (the prices that are displayed are posted by users of the Android app and GasBuddy.com). Then, search the tab for the type of fuel you need (regular, mid-grade, premium, diesel). You can sort the results by price  or by distance. If you want more information on a specific station, tap it. You’ll see photos, address, phone number, prices, station features (convenience store, service station, restrooms, air hose, etc.). Additionally, you can search for stations in the map view if you want to find the cheapest station that is nearest your current route.

Final note: make sure to “pay it forward” and report prices as you see them so you can help others save too!

Pros:

  • A truly fast and easy way to save money
  • Full information provided for each station
  • Search results by zip code or GPS

Areas for improvement:

  • Directions to stations after mapping (in Google Maps/Navigation)
  • Less populated areas may not have price information (due to dependence on user-submitted values)

Conclusion: If you’ve got a desire to save a few bucks on that next big fill-up, GasBuddy is a must-have!

FlightTrack allows you to track domestic and international flights in real-time. Stay up-to-date!

  • Version: 1.5.2
  • Size: 2.23MB
  • Category: Travel
  • Price: $4.99

If you’re a frequent flyer, this app is definitely worth the price. You will appreciate the real-time updates that keep you from wasting time waiting for delayed/canceled flights or missing flights due to gate changes.

Main features:

  • Live flight status and gate information
  • Live flight tracker maps (including speed, altitude, and location)
  • Homescreen widget with latest flight status
  • Offline mode
  • Data synchronization with TripIt Travel Organizer (only with TripIt Pro, paid upgrade)

A couple great aspects of this app are the ability to share flight information directly from within the app via email, text message, and twitter. This is a great way to keep loved ones updated on your status. Also, the option to select a flight as a “repeating flight” is great if you’re often making the same trip over and over again (or if you work for the airline!).

Pros:

  • Notifications from the FAA, airline, or airport when there’s a change in gate, departure, or arrival, plus any time changes that are greater than 10 minutes apart
  • Widget keeps you informed from the homescreen
  • Data automatically refreshed every 5 minutes

Areas for improvement:

  • Flight information not always accurate, but not really the app’s fault

Conclusion: A must have app for any business traveler or frequent flyer. Don’t be caught off-guard again!
