An ideal mobile game is one that you can pick up and play for short periods of time. Remember the days of ‘Snake’ on your old Nokia phone? That’s the same type of game that is offered by Friction Mobile.
Application: Friction Mobile
Overall Score: 4.75/5
The game play in Friction Mobile is extremely simple yet addicting. The developer pretty much summed it up in a short ‘Instructions’ page.
How to play: Press the trackball/screen to launch an orb.
How to score: Hit a stationary orb three times to score one point.
How to lose: Ricochet orb back across the dotted line.
Arcade Mode is where you’ll find the basic game play. Keep knocking out orbs to build your score. Try different angles, setups, and strategies. It’s easy to make a mistake and knock yourself out, so be careful or else you’ll find yourself starting all over again with a score of 0.
Level Mode brings a different challenge to the game where you’ll need to attain a certain score to unlock the next level. For example, you’ll need to knock out 6 orbs to unlock level 2.
If you’re looking for a little more freedom and less of a challenge, try Fun Mode. Here you can set the speed of the moving ball, the distance the ball travels, and how fast the gun rotates. In this mode you actually can’t lose, so have fun with it!
Overall, if you’re looking for a game to help you kill time (and one that you don’t have to invest tons of time in), give Friction Mobile a try. You’ll actually find it to be quite challenging.
Puzzle Blox is one of the best matching/puzzle games that we have played to date. It is inspired by classic games that you are sure to have played like Tetris, Bubble Breaker, and Bejeweled. This Android game takes the classics to a whole new level, challenging you with new twists that are sure to have you hooked. There are four difficulties, over 100 levels, colorful graphics, etc. what’s not to enjoy?
First off, what makes this game even better than its predecessors is that it uses your phone’s accelorometer and thus the orientation of your phone to move blocks. When you think you’re stuck, rotate your phone to realign the blocks for new chances of beating the level.
Puzzle Blox offers three different play styles: Arcade!, Puzzle Mode, and Challenge. Arcade! mode spawns new blocks continuously that start to fill the playing field. Tap groups of 3 or more adjacent blocks to remove them and gain points. Continue for as long as possible to run up your score! Remember, if you’re not finding blocks to destroy, try tilting your screen to one side.
Puzzle Mode introduces even more strategy to the game, giving it the true puzzle feel. This mode takes more thought and analysis and is more challenging than the Arcade! mode. Give this mode a try for a brain teaser.
Lastly, Chellenge Mode adds another level of complexity by challenging you to complete various setups that have different requirements like using only 1 move, beating the clock, or knocking all blocks out in a large combo.
A great addition to this game is the High Scores leaderboard. There are tabs for both your own personal high scores and those of all players on Puzzle Blox. Furthermore, each different game mode has it’s own leaderboard. This gives the game a lot more staying power as it provides you with the challenge of being one of the best on Android.
You also have the option of changing the background image/blocks style if you want something a little more unique. Customize to your liking. Here are a couple of examples of what is offered.
Overall, Puzzle Blox is a great adaptation and evolution from the original match 3 games. It offers new twists and playability that you’ll only find on Android. The developer is very involved in the Android community and dedicated to the success of this game. Here is Puzzle Blox’s website if you’d like more information.
You can try the free Arcade! version before downloading the full version if you’d like. We guarantee you’ll enjoy this one! Scan this QR code with Barcode Scanner or click on it (if you’re on your Android phone) to be taken to Puzzle Blox Arcade! (Free) in the Android Market.

Trap! is a very simplistic (yet addicting) Android game. The goal of this game is to capture screen area by trapping the bouncing balls inside walls.
Overall Score: 4.5/5
Again this game’s basic premise is to secure and enclose area without a ball inside. To draw a line, swipe your finger in the direction you’d like the line to be. When you capture >75% of the area, you beat the level. If a ball hits your line before it’s completely drawn, you will lose a life. Progressive levels are harder as more balls are added. Power-ups and a bonus system are also implemented in this game for greater playability. For example, if you tap the blue “SPEED” button, your next line will be drawn faster. These bonuses are limited, although you can capture more of them by entrapping them in the play screen. The full list of bonuses and icons for each can be found below. Also, in order to increase your score, try: completing the level faster, collecting items, isolating each ball in its own box, capturing a large area in one swipe, or capturing other bonuses. Each of these is a multiplier used to calculate your final score.
There is a high score entry for the game which is nice to track your progression. However, there isn’t an online scoreboard which would greatly add to the indispensability of this app as you’d be more likely to play if you’re trying to beat someone else’s score.
The graphics aren’t the greatest but the game does bring a simple, yet challenging game to Android. Try it out and see what you think.
Radiant is an Android game based on older arcade space shooters where you fight to overcome an alien horde. If you’d like to relive classic shooter games, this is it. It is made by Hexage who created another game you might’ve played, Buka.
Price: £1.50 (~$2.50)
Overall Score: 4.625/5
The object of the game is to fight through alien units, bosses, and meteors to save your homeland. Destroying other units helps you to collect upgraded weapons, power-ups, and improvements to your ship. Money from kills also lets you purchase upgrades to help you in your journey.
The graphics give the game a very polished feel and help you really get into the game. Also, the storyline is well done and adds another fine touch to the user experience. Oftentimes games like this forget how important a good storyline is, but not here.
Some complaints in the Android Market were about controls and some lag. While I noticed a little bit of these issues, they cleared up pretty fast after playing the game for a little while. I wouldn’t let these concerns deter you.

Robo Defense, created by Lupis Labs Software, is a great rendition of the familiar tower defense type game. It features multiple map layouts which greatly add to the challenge. You can start out with maps that have a single entrance and exit for units you need to kill (easier), to maps with multiple entrances and exits (more difficult). There are also up to 20 levels for each of the map types so you know you’ll be playing this addictive game for awhile.
Application: Robo Defense
Overall Score: 4.75/5
The first thing you’ll notice is that Robo Defense has nice graphics for a tower defense game developed for Android. This definitely adds to the high rating because no one wants to tolerate poor graphics for very long.
A very nice feature which greatly adds to the indispensability of this game is the amount of upgrades that can be made to your each of your units. The more upgrades that are offered, the more of a strategy the game truly has. Also, with each kill you make, you earn reward points. These reward points can be used to upgrade specific characteristics of the game, i.e. number of lives you have, amount of damage each missile does, speeding up reload times, etc. You will definitely be spending these reward points in order to give you the edge to advance to the next level.
Overall Robo Defense is a great app for your Android phone. You’ll find yourself playing this game whenever you’ve got some downtime. Hopefully you earn a few achievements along the way!
