Top Android Game: Parachute

Posted on Apr 10, 2011 in Games, Top Rated Games | comment

Parachute is a challenging variation on the popular genre of Android games that includes the likes of Abduction! and Doodle Jump.

  • Version: 1.1.5
  • Size: 3.61MB (apps2SD enabled)
  • Category: Games
  • Price: ~$2.44 (Free trial available)

This Parachute Android game features 40 levels across 5 uniquely themed regions (mountains, jungle, desert, area 51, and space. Your mission is to guide Paraman from high above to the landing pad while avoiding obstacles and enemies.

It’s critical for games like this to have responsive and precise controls, and luckily Parachute does. The controls are based on your Android device’s orientation. By tilting your device left and right, Paraman will glide in that direction. Similarly, tilting your device toward you will speed up his descent while tilting it away will slow him down.

To maximize your score (and earn a place on the local and online high scores list), you’ll want to finish levels as fast as possible (without using all of your lives) while also collecting power-ups along the way. The power-ups are mystery boxes suspended in the air by colored balloons. All you have to do is steer Paraman into them to reap their benefits. Some power-ups include score bonuses, extra lives, and speed enhancements.

  • 40 unique levels with challenging obstacles in each
  • 2 play modes; normal (discrete number of lives) and kids (lost lives only cause a score deduction but don’t end level)
  • Responsive controls
  • Simple, addicting concept

Areas for improvement:

  • Leaderboard and menus could benefit from graphics improvements

Conclusion: Parachute Paraman to safety in this challenging Android game of precision controls and obstacle navigation.

Posted on Mar 26, 2011 in Games, Top Rated Games | 3 comments

The Angry Birds just got angrier as their feathery friends have been captured and smuggled into Rio di Janeiro.

  • Version: 1.0.0
  • Size: 12.5MB (apps2SD enabled)
  • Category: Games
  • Price: Free

The Angry Birds are back with a vengeance in this latest rendition. Instead of destroying the hordes of enemy swine (as in the original), your goal is now to free all of the caged birds who are being held against their will. The objective now feels a lot more heroic and less vigilante.

You’ll definitely notice that the graphics have been touched-up and the overall playability has improved. A pleasant surprise has been the addition of awards and secret items that make the game more unpredictable and exciting. An example is the “golden fruit,” which are unseen and unknown prizes that you must discover in different levels. Receive a trophy by beating all 30 stages in each environment and then earn a three-star bonus by mastering each stage with 3 stars.

As of now, only two environments are available for play, with the other four arriving between May and November of this year. It’s obvious that this ties into the new 20th Century Fox movie, but the current state of the game and backstory is entertaining nonetheless.

  • Improved/polished graphics and gameplay
  • New challenges/items added to levels like chains, lamps, cages etc.
  • Whimsical music and sound effects
  • Still as fun and addictive as the original!

Areas for improvement:

  • Available only through the Amazon AppStore, which must stay installed
  • Four out of the six environments are yet to be released

Conclusion: An attractive, exciting new rendition to the incredibly popular saga of Angry Birds games.

Guerrilla Bob offers stunning visuals, cross-platform multiplayer, an arsenal of power-packed weaponry, unique enemies, and non-stop humor.

  • Version: 1.0.1
  • Size: 26.43MB (no apps2SD)
  • Category: Games
  • Price: $2.99

Guerrilla Bob is a fast-paced shooter reminiscent of classic, scrolling arcade games. You’ll have to fight off hordes of enemies that will come at you with a variety of dangerous weapons. Some foes will lob bombs at you while others will rush you with their flame-thrower. Destroying enemies earns you cash which can be used to upgrade your own arsenal. A few of your choices include shotguns, double uzis, a rocket launcher, and molotov cocktails.

Single-player mode offers an entertaining storyline in addition to the non-stop action. Fight for fame in Arcade Mode or fortune in Mercenary Mode. In either case, make sure to explore your surroundings to discover hidden areas, secret power-ups, and bonus items.

You can also collaborate with friends in multiplayer mode, but only over WiFi. Since this Android game was first (and still is) an extremely popular iOS, you’ll be pleased to know you can play side-by-side with your iPhone buddies (we all have them!).

Overall, the controls are very similar to Guns Bros, where you control movement with a virtual direction pad on the left of the screen. Shoot continuously by holding down on the right of the screen with your other hand. Guerrilla Bob will auto-target nearby enemies that are nearest to you and pose the greatest threat. This is a welcomed feature as targeting can be a frustrating experience, especially on small smartphone screens.

  • Advanced, accelerated graphics and challenging, explosive gameplay
  • Single-player and multiplayer modes
  • Variety of powerful weapons to combat the array of enemies
  • Track progress and compete with the Android community using OpenFeint integration

Areas for improvement:

  • Option to toggle auto-targeting for users who would like an added, manual challenge
  • Co-op mode with other Android/iOS users (not just over WiFi)
  • Needs apps2SD support!

Conclusion: A fast-paced, gun-toting, destruction-driven Android game.
